In its reduced form, glutathione carries a sulfhydryl group that can donate electrons. This property lets it act as a major cellular antioxidant and redox buffer. Glutathione peroxidase uses it to reduce hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides, while glutathione reductase regenerates the reduced form using NADPH. The ratio of reduced glutathione to glutathione disulfide is widely used as an indicator of oxidative stress, though the ratio changes with compartment, cell type, and sample handling. Oxidized glutathione can also form mixed disulfides with proteins, affecting their activity.
Glutathione supports detoxification by conjugating reactive electrophiles through glutathione S-transferases. The resulting conjugates are processed and exported, often after further metabolism. It also stores cysteine, transports amino acids across membranes through the gamma-glutamyl cycle, and assists in the maturation of iron-sulfur clusters and some prostaglandins. In plants, animals, and many microbes, the molecule appears in similar roles, but concentrations vary enormously between tissues. Liver, kidney, and red blood cells tend to contain high amounts, while blood plasma contains much less.
Storage conditions strongly influence glutathione stability. The solid reduced form is commonly kept desiccated at or below minus twenty degrees Celsius, protected from light and moisture. Aqueous solutions are less stable because the thiol group reacts with dissolved oxygen, and oxidation accelerates at neutral or alkaline pH. Acidic solutions and oxygen-free handling can slow degradation, but repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided. Researchers often verify concentration before use, because apparent losses can arise from oxidation or water uptake.
Measuring glutathione in biological samples requires attention to oxidation and matrix effects. High-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet or fluorescence detection can separate reduced and oxidized forms after derivatization. Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry offers higher specificity and can quantify glutathione alongside related thiols. Because glutathione can oxidize during sample handling, many protocols use rapid acidification with metaphosphoric acid or sulfosalicylic acid. Internal standards help correct for losses during extraction and analysis.
Enzymatic recycling assays provide a complementary approach for total glutathione. In these methods, glutathione reductase reduces oxidized glutathione while a thiol-reactive reagent, such as 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid), produces a colored product. The reaction cycles between reduced and oxidized forms, amplifying the signal. Spectrophotometric or fluorometric detection can then estimate concentration. Distinguishing reduced glutathione from glutathione disulfide often requires separate aliquots, masking agents, or chromatographic separation, and the choice affects reported values.

Biosynthesis proceeds in two ATP-dependent steps. First, glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine. Second, glutathione synthetase adds glycine to the intermediate. The pathway is regulated by cysteine availability, enzyme expression, and feedback inhibition by glutathione itself. Liver tissue has a particularly high capacity for synthesis and export. Because the molecule is made inside cells, circulating glutathione reflects a balance of release, uptake, and breakdown rather than simple dietary supply.
Functionally, glutathione supports redox balance by donating electrons and becoming oxidized. It also serves as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes participate in peroxide reduction and in conjugation reactions that help process reactive molecules. Separate from antioxidant roles, glutathione can modify protein cysteines through S-glutathionylation, influencing enzyme activity and signaling. Research continues to examine how these chemical roles translate into whole-organism effects.
Glutathione is a small sulfur-containing peptide built from glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. Its distinctive feature is a gamma-glutamyl bond between glutamate's side-chain carboxyl group and cysteine's amino group. This linkage resists ordinary peptidases and helps the molecule remain stable inside cells. The reduced thiol form, often abbreviated GSH, is the dominant intracellular species. The oxidized disulfide dimer, GSSG, forms when two reduced molecules link through their cysteine sulfur atoms. The balance between these forms is a common redox indicator.
In living systems, glutathione occurs in millimolar concentrations in many cell types, while extracellular levels are generally much lower. The liver holds a substantial share of the body's total pool, and the molecule participates in reduction, detoxification, and amino acid transport. It also serves as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase. Because the cysteine residue supplies a reactive thiol, glutathione can donate electrons and become oxidized. Cells regenerate reduced glutathione through glutathione reductase using NADPH.

Zirconium-based MOFs, including members of the UiO family, have been incorporated into polymeric coatings on SPME Arrow devices for the extraction of phenolic contaminants from food samples. For example, an amino-functionalized UiO-67 material was dispersed in polyacrylonitrile and deposited on a stainless-steel SPME Arrow by electrospinning. The coating was used with high-performance liquid chromatography and ultraviolet detection to determine bisphenol A, p-tert-butylphenol, 4-pentylphenol, nonylphenol, and hexestrol in milk and pork. The reported limits of detection were 0.003–0.01 μg L−1, and the coating retained stable extraction performance over 200 extraction–desorption cycles.

Azilsartan, candesartan, eprosartan, irbesartan, olmesartan, telmisartan, valsartan ARBs are generally well-tolerated, in which they are less likely to cause cough or angioedema compared to ACEI. Common side effects include hypotension, renal insufficiency, and hyperkalemia. The contraindications of ARBs are similar to those of ACEI, including the contraindicated combinations with ACEI or direct renin inhibitors, "triple whammy" (the concurrent use of an ARB with diuretics and NSAIDs) and in patients with a history of angioedema and pregnancy. In addition, ARB should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment and renal failure risk in severe bilateral renal stenosis
The Treaty established that the new state would be a constitutional monarchy, with the Governor-General of the Irish Free State as the representative of the Crown. The Constitution of the Irish Free State made more detailed provision for the state's system of government, with a three-tier parliament, called the Oireachtas, made up of the king and two houses, Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann (the Irish Senate). Executive authority was vested in the king, with the Governor-General as his representative. He appointed a cabinet called the Executive Council to "aid and advise" him. The Executive Council was presided over by a prime minister called the President of the Executive Council. In practice, most of the real power was exercised by the Executive Council, as the Governor-General was almost always bound to act on the advice of the Executive Council.
== Medical uses == Cilostazol is approved for the treatment of intermittent claudication in the United States and United Kingdom. If no improvement is seen after 3 months, stopping the medication is reasonable. Cilostazol is also used for secondary stroke prevention, though to date no regulatory body has approved it specifically for that indication.
=== Afonso Dias === In one of the Dias' hearings, it was brought up that the defendant came from a poor family, was 22 and played with an 11 year old child at the time of the disappearance. It was also brought up that the defendant was meeting up with Mendonça in private as Mendonça's parents had forbidden it, after Dias came back changed from the army and as a deserter. Manuel Mendonça said that he and the neighbors noticed that Dias' financial resources increased after the boy's disappearance and that the first PJ team did not believe the information received from both the prostitute and the family. Dias was an unhygienic person, however in the day of the disappearance he took two baths. When Manuel Mendonça got to the PJ they said it was not possible to extract anything from the suspect's clothes. Manuel Mendonça also said that Dias laughed while talking to Filomena Teixeira. He also said that the defendant's lawyer and family did not want to help to find Mendonça. The chief-inspector Henrique Noronha said in 2011 that in the reconstitution there was "a hiatus of time that we couldn't figure out (...) We were a bit perplexed [when Afonso Dias said that he] stood in a place looking at nothing and burning the midnight". The inspector also said that he did not understand the reason of not following the lead of Alcina Dias. Hélder Silva, that was one of the five children that saw Mendonça for the last time, told the Correio da Manhã that Dias "Was very weird. Afonso knew Rui Pedro's whole life, where he was, who he was with, what he would do the next day.

=== Substrates === Substrates within the muscle serve to power muscular contractions. They include molecules such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), glycogen and creatine phosphate. ATP binds to the myosin head and causes the 'ratchetting' that results in contraction according to the sliding filament model. Creatine phosphate stores energy so ATP can be rapidly regenerated within the muscle cells from adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and inorganic phosphate ions, allowing for sustained powerful contractions that last between 5–7 seconds. Glycogen is the intramuscular storage form of glucose, used to generate energy quickly as intramuscular phosphocreatine stores become exhausted, producing lactic acid as a metabolic byproduct. Substrate shortage is one of the causes of metabolic fatigue. Substrates are depleted during exercise or are unable to be metabolized (e.g. metabolic myopathies), resulting in a lack of intracellular energy sources to fuel contractions. In essence, the muscle stops contracting because it lacks the energy to do so.
== Overview == Anti–money laundering guidelines came into prominence globally as a result of the formation of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and the promulgation of an international framework of anti–money laundering standards. These standards began to have more relevance in 2000 and 2001, after FATF began a process to publicly identify countries that were deficient in their anti–money laundering laws and international cooperation, a process colloquially known as "name and shame". An effective AML program requires a jurisdiction to criminalise money laundering, giving the relevant regulators and police the powers and tools to investigate; be able to share information with other countries as appropriate; and require financial institutions to identify their customers, establish risk-based controls, keep records, and report suspicious activities. Strict background checks are necessary to combat as many money launderers escape by investing through complex ownership and company structures. Banks can do that but proper surveillance is required on the government side to reduce this. Over recent years, the rise in anti–money laundering mechanisms has been attributed to the use of big data and artificial intelligence. Traditional anti–money laundering systems are falling behind against evolving threats and new technologies are helping AML compliance officers to deal with: poor implementation, expanding regulation, administrative complexity, false positives.

It is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. The glutamate-cysteine bond is unusual because it forms through the gamma-carboxyl group.
It reflects the balance between oxidant exposure and antioxidant capacity. The ratio is not a direct clinical diagnosis and depends on the tissue and sample method.
No. It also participates in detoxification, amino acid transport, and protein modification. Its roles vary by cell type and compartment.
Chromatographic methods can separate the two forms before detection. Enzymatic assays often measure total glutathione first and then use a separate procedure to estimate the oxidized fraction. The difference between total and oxidized amounts provides an indirect estimate of the reduced form.
